April, 2026 True Price & Impact Institute
Report commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam
This report assesses the hidden social and environmental costs of the coffee the City of Amsterdam buys through its sustainable procurement tender. Commissioned by the City of Amsterdam, the study was carried out by True Price and Impact Institute, together with supplier Selecta and importer This Side Up. It covers a blend of two coffee origins sourced from Brazil and Rwanda, The assessment focuses on Fazenda California in Brazil and the Rushashi cooperative in Rwanda, which together account for 72% of the volume, and looks at coffee cultivation and wet and dry processing. Roasting and transport are not included. It measures climate change, land use, land transformation and scarce water use, as well as underpayment, underearning, child labour and forced labour. The results are based on surveys in Brazil and on interviews with 201 farmers and 50 workers in Rwanda, supported by country averages from the True Price Database.
